ECOLUM Engages in Regional Training on Waste Management Solutions

ECOLUM had the honor of being represented at a two-day Capacity Training on Waste Management organized by the West Africa Coastal Areas Project (WACA) in collaboration with the National Environment Agency (NEA). The training was held from 23rd to 24th September 2025 at the TANGO office.

Our Project coordinator Mr Yusupha Cham represented us at ty event. The program focused on strengthening stakeholder knowledge and skills in sustainable waste management practices, with detailed sessions on waste recycling, composting, and conversion into fuel and energy. Facilitators from the NEA led the sessions, emphasizing innovative approaches to transforming waste into useful resources.

A key discussion centered on the Kotu Stream, which stretches approximately 11.2 km from Nema Kunku to Kotu. The stream plays a vital role in flood prevention but has historically been obstructed by waste, leading to frequent blockages and flooding in nearby residential areas. Through WACA’s intervention, a proper management plan has been introduced, including a monthly anti-littering and cleansing exercise to ensure its sustainability.

Participants included civil society organizations, council members, municipal waste officers, and private waste collectors. The training brought together stakeholders from three of the most affected regions West Coast Region, Kanifing Municipality, and Banjul to share real-life experiences, challenges, and solutions in managing waste at community and regional levels.

This initiative reflects a growing commitment to tackling waste management issues and building resilient systems that safeguard both communities and the environment.
