ECOLUM Champions Dialogue on Building Integrated Climate Resilience and Peace Policies for Sustainable Urban Development

ECOLUM, under the leadership of its Executive Director, Hon. Abdoulie Njai, together with other executive members Mr. Yusupha Cham (project coordinator) and Mr. Amadou Wurry Jallow (head of communications )actively participated in a high-level dialogue on โ€œBuilding Integrated Climate Resilience and Peace Policies for Sustainable Urban Development.โ€ The event, hosted by Peace Ambassadors โ€“ The Gambia (Banjul Chapter), brought together diverse stakeholders, including women, youth, policymakers, and civil society actors, to discuss urgent strategies for safeguarding communities against the twin challenges of climate change and conflict.

Hon. Njai shared critical insights on the intersection between climate resilience and peacebuilding, emphasizing the need for inclusive policies that not only mitigate environmental risks but also strengthen social cohesion. His intervention underscored ECOLUMโ€™s mandate of advancing climate justice and promoting sustainable, people-centered urban development across The Gambia.

The dialogue highlighted Banjulโ€™s unique vulnerabilities, from rising sea levels and waste management issues to socio-political tensions exacerbated by environmental stressors. Hon. Njai stressed that climate action must go hand in hand with peacebuilding, ensuring that vulnerable groups, particularly women and youth, are at the heart of decision-making processes.

We acknowledge and deeply appreciate the contributions of all panelists and stakeholders, including:

  • Mr. Yankuba Manjang, Peace Ambassadors โ€“ The Gambia
  • Mr. Lamin Samateh, National Environment Agency (NEA)
  • Mr. Modou Lamin B. Bah, Face of Banjul North Constituency

Special thanks also go to REFELA The Gambia National Chapter, Bloomberg Philanthropies, and the Banjul City Council, whose support was pivotal in making this important conversation possible.

This engagement reflects ECOLUMโ€™s growing leadership in connecting climate resilience with peacebuilding efforts and advancing practical solutions for sustainable urban development in The Gambia.
